bucks 101, wizards — ah,
Tuesday, January 16th, 2001bucks 101, wizards — ah, nevermind
so, it’s the second quarter. wizards are trailing, of course, but that’s okay ’cause my seats rock. my cell phone rings. I answer, expecting a friend. what do I get instead?
Voice: May I speak with Mr. Jason Novak?
Me: Speaking.
Voice: Mr. Novak, my name is Nicole and I’m calling on behalf of [major credit card company] to talk to you about a wonderful opportunity you have with us.
Me: Uh. I’m at a basketball game.
Nicole: Oh, is this a cell phone?
Me (wishing I would say what I was really thinking: no, it’s my home phone. I live in the MCI Center freakin’ Arena): Yes. Yes it is.
Nicole: Is your team winning?
Me: Ha. Ha. No. (translation: you don’t know what area code you just called, clearly.)
Nicole: Then you have time to discuss this offer! We’re prepared to offer you blah blah blah.
Me: Can I call you back? I _am_ at a basketball game.
Timeout buzzer sounds.
Nicole: Sounds like you have time.
Me (managing to be frustrated and amused at the same time): Nicole, I’m going to have to call you back.
In retrospect, that was clearly the highlight of the game.
