That’s something new cookin’.
So there we were, thrashing like linkin park in the center of the living room, bobbing hunchbacks and air guitars, dark and beautifully violent recasts of our high school years. Failing to recognize the party’s natural entropic death, I wondered what the hell we were doing there, if we were trying to recapture those inchoherent, gray-veiled days of mosh pits and body bruises.
Then it dawned on me that perhaps the evening was winding down, and that I should just flow with it while it lasted.
Turns out a resurgence was in the wings. We hijacked the box and put on the dance tracks, insisting to the ladies the whole while that they would recognize the tunes eventually, soaking as we were in illicit mp3 remixes you can’t find on the street — remixes of such genius you only recognize the tune halfway through, and that recognition spurs you on to faster, frenzied, breathless dancing. Bathed in sweat, panting, you only stop when your body sounds the alarm: I will make your legs give out right here.
I felt old, and good.
Later, held in the unexpected contradictions of youth, I saw my peace of mind. The world had an impetuous feel to it, as if it were wandering around the cosmos with a metaphoric hat tilted rakishly, and I wasn’t just hanging on for the ride: I was enjoying it.
At 7:50am (eastern), jasonmnovak.com will be observing thirty seconds of silence in honor of today, the big day. After which, shots will be poured.
If you’d rather not reflect upon my birthday (really, I do know the world doesn’t revolve around me…too many of my friends insist it revolves around them, so until we get all that straightened out…), then at least reflect upon the meaning of Flag Day or perhaps consider how important it is that the US Army turns 226 today.
Err…unless you watch the show of course.
Advertising is not merely a human phenomenon, but a biological impulse found throughout the natural world. Peacocks attract the attention of a mate through a multicolored feather display. Baboons signal their sexual readiness with a pair of red, swollen buttock. And both the duck and gecko offer a broad range of attractively priced supplemental car insurance packages.
