Some photos for you.

Friday, July 26th, 2002

So I’ve decided to try getting back into photography again, after a brief love affair with 35mm SLRs in high school which, for those of you keeping track out there, was a long, long time ago in an galaxy so unbelievably far away.

I’ll probably end up putting these photos on Life in the District, but I thought I’d treat you all to a sneak preview. I’m starting out with black and white film because, well, not for any particular reason other than I enjoy it…it’s odd, just thinking in black and white makes you more aware of shapes and patterns more so than thinking in color. At least that’s the case for me. I have a lot to brush up on…from basics such as learning how to compose a shot to more advanced techniques…as you’ll see from the photos I have a long way to go. Nevertheless…hope you like ‘em. Enjoy!

Special thanks to Tiffany for letting me borrow her camera, a Minolta 505si.

Happiness is…

a freshly installed brand-new 40-watt appliance bulb, manufactured by GE Lighting, LLC (General Electric Company, Nela Park, Cleveland, Ohio, 44112). I can actually see the food in my refrigerator now, and what a simple joy it is. I should say being able to see in the interior of the fridge is joyous, not the food because, well, there’s not much food to see. A half-empty (or half-full, depending on the particular worldview you’ve cultivated thus far in your lifetime) jug of undoubtedly chunky milk and a styrofoam container filled with crusty food of unknown (and definitely untraceable) origin does not count as food.

Looks like someone needs to go to the store.

I dropped some film off at Ritz today, so for those of you absolutely DYING for some new jasonmnovak.com content (Mattie, this means you!), there will be more to look forward to from me in the next…let’s say twelve hours. I’m being generous with my time today.

Or is that stingy?

Either way, see you again soon.

Periods of intense verbosity? Who do I think I am, anyway?

I’ve been a little lax in my responsibilities with this website, and it’s starting to show. For all you loyal fans out there, I apologize unreservedly. Work has been taking up a lot of my time, as has play, which is a lot more work than you might think.

While I admit it’s not much of an excuse, both work and play have cut into my more “thoughtful” moments that are normally shared here. So does this awareness of the causes of my distractions mean I’ll be approaching my writing with a renewed vigour and concentration? Absolutely not. If you browse through the archives enough, you’ll see a precedent has already been set: writing comes and goes in cycles. Periods of intense verbosity followed by deep lulls of silence.

“Lull, shmull,” you say.

My rejoinder? “Well put! Way to the cut through the nonsense. I’m just a talking head.”

Lest I leave you without anything useful at all, let me tell you I highly recommend seeing “Road to Perdition,” the new Tom Hanks flick. So good. ‘Specially if you’re in DC and you see it at the Uptown — the sound in that theatre is phenomenal, with a capital “ph”. Or is that capitol “ph”?
