Yahoo! rocks my world (again)

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Yahoo! Bookmarks are sweet. Sure, you can use a bajillion different ways to save your bookmarks online so you can get to them from anywhere…but if you have a Yahoo! account already, why not put it to good use?

The best part is that it was built using a PHP framework called symfony.

Yahoo! is my new Google. Except for searching.

New Handrails on Metro Cars?

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I’ve always wondered why, if Metro doesn’t want people crowding at the doors to the rail cars, they encourage the behavior with hand-holds near each door. Well, it seems they’ve realized how design affects behavior — yesterday, I was on what I presume was a test car (it looked there were camera domes in the ceiling toward the center of the car) that had completely reconfigured handrails. Instead of the uprights near each door, there were smaller handles bolted to the side of the car. And instead of the single center ceiling rail, there were shorter, angled bars near the exits, so that even if people insisted on using them, presumably there would be enough of a natural clearance for people to get in and out. We’ll see what happens…

Space: 1999

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

I don’t know what made me just think of this, but a week or so ago while having dinner with friends, I made a reference to one of my favorite programs from childhood, Space: 1999. I received five blank stares in return and was shocked to learn that not a single one of my friends at the table had ever seen (or even heard of!) the show. So, friends, to prove I’m not completely insane, here’s everything you need to know about exploding moons and journeys through the universe.

Sidenote: The producers of Space: 1999 also created Thunderbirds and UFO, which were also childhood favorites of mine…though UFO we watched in repeats (dubbed in Italian, to boot!).

Also, I used to have a toy Eagle Transporter (with detachable cargo pod!), but that’s neither here nor there.

PCMag’s Jennifer DeLeo PCMag.com considers what gadgets the survivors on ABC’s Lost need in order to escape the island…or at least make their lives a little bit easier.

Philippe Halsman defied gravitas

This article is a must-click not just for the interesting read, but for the photos. (Nixon caught in mid-air is just bizzare.)
